Here's the problem in one sentence: when you're under a sink, you can't answer the phone, and the customer with a burst pipe isn't going to wait. They'll ring the next plumber on the list.
A missed call is a missed job. AI can make sure there are far fewer of them.
Where AI actually fits
The standout use for plumbers is call answering. An AI voice assistant picks up, takes the customer's name, address and problem, works out how urgent it is and books a slot or flags it to you. You get a text with the details and carry on with what you're doing.
I've worked on a Voice AI SaaS product, so I've seen how good these assistants have become, and also where they still trip up: noisy lines, heavy accents and customers who want to explain their entire week before mentioning the leak.

What it's great at
- Answering every call, day and night, including the 11pm burst pipe
- Taking consistent details so you know what you're walking into
- Booking jobs into your calendar and sending confirmations
- Reminders, follow-ups and review requests after the job
What it's not great at
- Diagnosing the problem. It can ask good questions; it can't see the boiler
- Emergencies that need a human response right now, like a gas smell. Those go straight to you, or to the right emergency line
- Customers who simply want to talk to you. Some will, and that's fine
- Pricing tricky jobs without seeing them
How to implement it
Start with out-of-hours and missed calls. Forward them to the assistant, and keep answering yourself when you can. That's the lowest-risk way to see the value.
Tell the assistant which jobs you take, your areas, your rough availability and what counts as urgent. Then decide what it's allowed to book and what it should pass to you.
Listen to the call recordings for the first few weeks. You'll quickly hear what it handles well and what needs adjusting.
How I approach it
I set these up so that anything urgent or unusual reaches you straight away, with a summary, so you call back knowing exactly what's going on.
And I'm upfront about where it isn't the right fit. If you're fully booked six weeks out, you don't need more leads. You need better admin. We can talk about that too.
Ideas that work
- AI call answering for missed and out-of-hours calls
- Job booking straight into your calendar with SMS confirmation
- Urgency triage so emergencies jump the queue
- Post-job follow-ups and review requests that send themselves
Fed up of listening to voicemails from customers who've already booked someone else? Book a call and let's fix it.
